New Control System for Mechanical Treatment Processes

New Control System for Mechanical Treatment Processes

RESHETNEV (a ROSCOSMOS company) improves cutting process on numerically controlled machines (CNC).

A new cutting control system was devised and tested at one of the Siberian enterprise’s workshops. The system leverages data obtained in real time from the CNC machine’s vibration sensors and transmitted to the operator’s work station. The operator then analyzes the data received and selects the optimal cutting mode for each milling cutter. Previously, averaged data was used for this process.

In the frame of the rework, the equipment was diagnosed using a specialized CNC accident and overload protection system. The specialists also defined the tipping point between maximum equipment performance and permissible vibration levels.

The RESHETNEV team proved that poor processing quality often results from errant selection of cutting modes rather than the tool itself. As a result, surface roughness has been improved and machining time has been reduced by 40%. The possibility of using domestic instrumentation without quality impairment has been confirmed, which reduces dependence on imported supplies.

The approach has been proven a success, and will be extrapolated to all RESHETNEV manufacturing facilities. In the nearest future, databases will be created for each milling cutter, tying work modes to specific operations, implementing tool certification and quick adjustment techniques for new batches of milling cutters.
