GALS satellite on vibrating bench

A Landmark in TV History

January 20 marks the 30th anniversary of the launch of GALS, a direct broadcasting spacecraft created by “Academician M.F. Reshetnev “Information Satellite Systems”.

GALS was launched in 1994 with the aim to broadcast multichannel TV directly to the user device.

A pioneer for several groundbreaking technologies of its time, GALS was the first satellite in Russia to implement an onboard orbit inclination control system, as well as high frequency range spot antennas. It was also the first to feature an antenna pointing system with a rotating capability in addition to axial motion, which allowed for repointing between coverage areas directly from the orbital slot. Furthermore, the building of GALS prompted the implementation of an automated ground test system which significantly sped up the manufacturing process.

In order to operate this new direct broadcasting spacecraft, a dedicated SCC was built in Zheleznogorsk, marking another first, this time for civilian specialists controlling a satellite.

Two GALS spacecraft were put into operation, both living to exceed their guaranteed lifetime of 5 years.
