GEO-IK2 was developed and manufactured for the so named new generation geodetic system. The satellite launch on June 4, 2016 marked the beginning of satellite constellation building.
The satellite contributes to GEO-IK2 system mission objectives such as determining the Earth's gravitation field parameters, building a high-precision geodetic network in a geocentric reference system, monitoring the ice situation, determining the movement of Earth's tides continental plates and the marine geoid, as well as changes in the Earth's rotation rate and pole coordinates.
GEO-IK2 is still operating in orbit having doubled its five-year guaranteed lifetime.
Zheleznogorsk satellite building enterprise is the only Russian manufacturer of geodetic satellites and has manufactured over three dozen such satellites throughout its history.
